Why The Name Android P

Before now, Google has always followed the same trend in naming every version of its Android OS. Google name the Android V1.6, as Donut, (Notice The Letter D), this was followed by naming the preceding version (V2.0) as Éclair (Notice The Letter E). This trend has being used by Google to name the previous version and after the version 8 came as Oreo, it will be safe to say the next version will be expected as Android P. See list of previous version below.

Android Donut (v1.6)
Android Eclair (v2.0)
Android Froyo (v2.2)
Android Gingerbread (v2.3)
Android Honeycomb (v3.0)
Android Ice Cream Sandwich (v4.0)
Android Jelly Bean (v4.1)
Android KitKat (v4.4)
Android Lollipop (v5.0)
Android Marshmallow (v6.0)
Android Nougat (v7.0)
Android Oreo (v8.0)

With the new version being expected as Android P, we are yet to understand what the P stands for. There have been rumours in some quarters that the P could stand for Pie, Pecan Pie or Pumpkin Pie. Recent suggestion revealed that the new version may be called Android Pistachio Ice Cream based on what Google initially called the upcoming OS. Also so quarters have also suggested that it should be called Android Popsicle.

Expected Features Of The Android 9 (Android P)

Aside from preventing background (malicious) app from accessing your phone camera and microphone, rumour has it that the new OS will provide
  • Support for Wi-Fi Direct Printing
  • Bluetooth hearing aids
  • Better integration for Android Things
  • Support phones with a 'notch' design as well as foldable displays

While these may be rumours, the first smartphone expected to run the new Android 9 (Android P) will be the Google Pixel devices. After this, other manufacturers will follow; this is because the updates must first be tweaked to work with the brand before it can be rolled out.
