Facebook Planning To Remove ‘Trending’ Topics Section

Back in 2014, Facebook introduced the Trending section on its platform to help users discover trending news and topics. The Trending section was made available to five countries only and accounted for less than 1.5% of clicks to news publishers. Today the company says that it will be removing the section from its platform to make way for future news experiences on Facebook.


While the company plans next week for the remover of Trending from Facebook, it will also remove products and third-party partner integrations that rely on the Trends API. Facebook says it is exploring more ways to bring quality and trustworthy news to users of the platform. It is currently running ‘Breaking News Label‘ test with over 80 publishers across North America, South America, Europe, India, and Australia. 

The new platform lets publishers put a “breaking news” indicator on their posts in News Feed. It is already known that Facebook is working on a dedicated Today In local news and events section in the app. It will also launch a dedicated section on Facebook Watch in the US where people can view live coverage, daily news briefings.
